IN SCHRÖDINGER’S COFFIN
Amelia Earhart disappeared on July 2, 1937. We don't know is what happened next.

We continue to be fascinated because of the mystery. But I wonder if there’s something else at work, too.
Amelia Earhart has existed for decades in a kind of Schrödinger’s coffin.
Rationally, we understand she died long ago. And yet there was no body, no wreckage, no definitive account of her final moments. Her death exists as fact and mystery at the same time.
Death itself, of course, is our ultimate unknown. Regardless of what we believe happens afterward, none of us can know with certainty what the experience of dying will be like until it happens to us.
But when someone disappears, uncertainty is compounded.
Ambiguous loss is the phrase used to describe losses in which there is no certainty or resolution. A person may be physically absent but psychologically present. Without confirmation of death, the rituals and processes we normally associate with loss can become complicated.
There is no body to bury. No definitive story to tell. Sometimes, not even a definitive moment to point to when things changed.
Finding Amelia Earhart or her plane will not change the fact that she died. It wouldn't return her to anyone who loved her. After almost nine decades, there are few people alive who personally remember her disappearance.
Most of us will never become the subject of nearly century-long search. But the desire underneath it is deeply human: to have a story with an ending.
That's worth remembering when we talk about death and dying. Whenever possible, we can talk about what matters to us, what we're afraid of, what kind of care we would want, and what we hope the people we love will know.
We may never be able to plunge into the murky depths of a Schrödinger’s hypothetical at the bottom of a lagoon for a definitive answer. But we can leave a legacy on the surface so the ones we love aren't left lost.
